Paper 1 – Question 2

How does the writer use language to describe the setting here?

(8 marks)
Your response
The writer uses vivid and sensory language to create a calm but eerie atmosphere. The phrase “the trees whispered” suggests a sense of mystery and gives the setting a haunting feel. The adjective “ancient” makes the forest seem timeless and almost magical, while the use of sibilance in “softly in the breeze” creates a gentle, soothing tone which contrasts with the darker mood later in the extract.
